Bellingham Complementary and Integrative Health Directory: Find Local Care That Fits Your Needs

Finding the right health or wellness practitioner can feel overwhelming. Bellingham and Whatcom County have many experienced professionals, but their services are spread across different clinics, specialties, websites, and scheduling systems.

You may know that you need additional support without knowing exactly where to begin.

Should you contact a physical therapist, chiropractor, naturopathic physician, acupuncturist, massage therapist, movement professional, mental health practitioner, or home-care provider? Could several forms of care serve different purposes within your overall health plan? How do you evaluate a practitioner’s qualifications before scheduling?

Health and Exercise Prescriptions® created the Bellingham Complementary and Integrative Health Directory to make that search easier.

This consolidated community resource connects you with independent practitioners and supportive services throughout Bellingham, Whatcom County, and nearby communities. Instead of searching across multiple pages, you can now browse providers by specialty, review contact information, visit their websites, find directions, and access scheduling links from one central directory.

What Is Complementary and Integrative Health?

Complementary care refers to health and wellness approaches used alongside appropriate conventional medical care. Integrative health brings different forms of care together around the needs, preferences, and goals of the individual.

For example, someone recovering from joint surgery may receive medical care from a physician, rehabilitation from a physical therapist, massage or bodywork for comfort and mobility, and progressive post-rehabilitation exercise to rebuild strength and physical capacity.

Another person may combine primary medical care with acupuncture, nutrition guidance, stress-management practices, massage, Qigong, or other supportive services.

Complementary care should not replace medical evaluation, diagnosis, emergency treatment, prescribed care, or rehabilitation when those services are needed.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health recommends evaluating complementary practitioners as carefully as conventional healthcare providers. That includes considering education, licensing, certifications, experience, scientific evidence, safety, and the practitioner’s willingness to work with the other professionals involved in your care.

Explore Bellingham Practitioners by Specialty

The consolidated directory organizes practitioners into clear categories so you can explore the services that may be most relevant to your needs.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care may include assessment, manual techniques, movement guidance, and other approaches related to the musculoskeletal system. The directory includes Bellingham clinics offering chiropractic care, massage, acupuncture, movement-focused care, and mind-body wellness services.

If you are considering chiropractic care, ask about the practitioner’s training, treatment approach, expected length of care, and experience with your specific health history.

Naturopathic and Functional Medicine

Naturopathic and functional medicine practices may address nutrition, lifestyle, prevention, health education, and broader wellness concerns. Some providers also offer acupuncture or other complementary approaches.

Services differ considerably among practices. Confirm the provider’s credentials, scope of practice, appointment format, testing methods, fees, and whether they coordinate with your primary medical provider.

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation

Physical therapists evaluate and treat injuries, movement limitations, post-surgical needs, pain-related conditions, and other functional concerns within their professional scope.

Physical therapy may be the appropriate starting point when you need clinical rehabilitation, treatment following surgery, or professional evaluation of an injury. As rehabilitation progresses, post-rehabilitation exercise can help you continue rebuilding strength, endurance, balance, exercise tolerance, and confidence.

Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, and Qigong

The directory includes practitioners offering general acupuncture, orthopedic and sports acupuncture, Chinese medicine, herbs, dry needling, medical Qigong, Tai Chi, Pilates, corrective exercise, and movement training.

These services are not interchangeable. One acupuncturist may concentrate on orthopedic or sports-related concerns, while another may integrate Chinese medicine, Qigong, herbs, or mind-body practices.

Review each practitioner’s specialty and ask how their experience relates to your goals.

Massage, Craniosacral, Somatic, and Movement Services

Hands-on and movement-oriented services in the directory include massage therapy, Thai bodywork, craniosacral therapy, scar-tissue work, structural integration, Rolfing, somatic bodywork, Yoga therapy, Tai Chi, Qigong, hypnotherapy, and integrative bodywork.

Some people seek these services for relaxation and restoration. Others may be working on mobility, body awareness, muscular tension, recovery, stress regulation, or returning to comfortable movement.

The provider should clearly explain the purpose and limitations of the service, obtain informed consent, and modify the session according to your health history and comfort.

Mental Health, Hypnosis, and Mind-Body Services

Physical health and emotional well-being frequently influence one another. Stress, pain, major life changes, caregiving, injury, sleep disruption, and health uncertainty can affect how you feel and function.

The directory includes independent providers offering nature-based therapy, family constellations, community work, clinical hypnotherapy, and mind-body support.

Training and licensing requirements vary across these fields. Ask whether a provider is licensed to diagnose or treat mental health conditions and verify that their qualifications match the kind of support you are seeking.

Home and Supportive Care

For older adults, people with disabilities, individuals recovering from illness or surgery, and family caregivers, health support may extend beyond a clinic.

The directory includes non-medical home-care resources that may provide personal care, mobility assistance, respite, and help with daily activities. These services can support safety, dignity, family connection, and the ability to remain at home.

Ask each agency about caregiver screening, training, supervision, scheduling, service limitations, and payment arrangements.

How to Choose the Right Practitioner

A directory gives you a starting point, but you still need to determine whether a particular practitioner is appropriate for you.

Before scheduling, consider asking:

  • What education, licensing, and certifications do you hold?

  • Do you regularly work with people who have my condition or limitations?

  • What will the first appointment include?

  • What are the potential benefits, risks, and limitations?

  • How will we measure whether the service is helping?

  • How many sessions might be recommended?

  • What are the fees and cancellation policies?

  • Do you accept insurance, or is the service private pay?

  • Are you willing to communicate with my physician or rehabilitation provider when appropriate?

  • When would you refer me to another healthcare professional?

Be cautious of anyone who promises guaranteed results, claims to cure numerous unrelated conditions, discourages appropriate medical treatment, or pressures you into a large prepaid treatment package before adequately assessing your needs.

Why Communication Between Providers Is Important

When several professionals are involved, each person should understand their role.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality defines care coordination as intentionally organizing care activities and sharing relevant information among the people involved. The goal is to make care safer, more appropriate, and more effective while keeping the individual’s needs and preferences at the center.

Tell your providers about the treatments, exercise programs, medications, supplements, and complementary practices you use. A complete picture can help identify possible contraindications, duplicated services, conflicting advice, or gaps in your plan.

You are not collecting treatments. You are building a coordinated approach in which each service has a clear purpose.

Where Health and Exercise Prescriptions® Fits

Health and Exercise Prescriptions® provides medical exercise, post-rehabilitation programming, therapeutic massage and integrated bodywork, mobility work, and progressive strength and conditioning.

Many people reach a point where they no longer need acute treatment but do not feel prepared for conventional personal training. They may still experience weakness, stiffness, limited exercise tolerance, balance concerns, movement restrictions, or fear of reinjury.

Medical Exercise and Post-Rehabilitation at HEP® can help bridge that space. Your individualized plan may progressively combine mobility, balance, cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, therapeutic bodywork, and other appropriate strategies.

HEP® does not diagnose medical conditions or replace physicians and physical therapists. When symptoms require diagnosis, acute care, medical treatment, or services outside our professional scope, we refer you to an appropriate healthcare provider.

Supporting Bellingham’s Health and Wellness Community

The directory is more than a list of businesses. It reflects the range of professionals helping people throughout Bellingham and Whatcom County manage their health, recover from setbacks, remain active, reduce stress, and preserve independence.

You can also learn more about individual providers through local practitioner features such as The Daily Container: Qigong With Dr. Shannon Freeman.
