Support Local Businesses in Downtown Bellingham: 20 Small Actions That Strengthen Our Community

Every local storefront has a story we cannot see from the sidewalk.

Behind the window is often a person who took a risk. Someone signed a lease, invested their savings, learned a craft, earned professional credentials, hired neighbors, and opened the door without knowing exactly who would walk through it. There are early mornings, late nights, rising expenses, quiet weeks, difficult decisions, and the hope that the community will continue to care.

As the founder of Health and Exercise Prescriptions® in downtown Bellingham, I understand what a local purchase can mean. When someone books a session, writes a thoughtful review, recommends my work to a friend, or simply shares one of my posts, that person is doing more than supporting a business transaction. They are saying, “I see the value of what you do, and I want you to remain part of this community.”

That support matters more than many people realize.

Why Supporting Local Businesses in Bellingham Matters

According to Sustainable Connections, approximately $50 of every $100 spent at a locally owned business recirculates and remains in the local economy. When the same amount is spent at a national chain, only about $15 remains locally.

This does not mean that every local dollar magically turns into three dollars. It means that locally owned businesses keep more than three times as much money circulating in the community.

The American Independent Business Alliance explains that locally spent dollars may recirculate through a community two to four times more than money spent with a non-local company. A business owner may use that revenue to pay a local employee, hire a local bookkeeper, purchase from a nearby supplier, rent space from a local property owner, support a school fundraiser, or eat at another neighborhood restaurant.

The first purchase starts a chain of local activity.

There are also benefits that cannot be measured entirely in dollars. Local businesses contribute knowledge, relationships, gathering places, mentorship, culture, specialized services, and a sense of identity. They help determine whether downtown feels personal and alive or becomes a collection of interchangeable storefronts.

Downtown Bellingham is currently home to more than 50 independent shops, along with locally owned restaurants, cafés, studios, wellness practices, galleries, professional services, and entertainment venues. Explore the Downtown Bellingham shopping directory.

20 Easy Ways to Support Downtown Bellingham Businesses

Supporting local does not have to mean spending more money or buying everything locally. It begins by becoming a little more intentional about where we look, what we share, and which businesses we help others discover.

Spend With Purpose

  1. Look locally before ordering elsewhere. Before automatically turning to a national retailer or online marketplace, take a moment to see whether a Bellingham business offers what you need.

  2. Visit downtown in person. Walking through downtown gives you an opportunity to notice new storefronts, read menus, meet business owners, and discover services that may never appear in your social-media feed.

  3. Replace one routine purchase each week. You do not have to change every shopping habit. Start with one meal, cup of coffee, gift, book, wellness service, or household purchase.

  4. Buy directly from the business. When possible, order through the business’s website, call the business, or visit in person. Third-party platforms can reduce the amount of money the business receives.

  5. Give a local gift card. Sustainable Connections offers a Whatcom Think Local First Gift Card that can be redeemed at more than 250 locally owned businesses. It allows the recipient to choose something meaningful while keeping the spending within Whatcom County.

Help Local Businesses Become Visible

  1. Write a thoughtful review. A few specific sentences about what you appreciated can help another person feel confident visiting, buying, or booking.

  2. Add a photograph to your review. A helpful photograph of a product, meal, storefront, treatment space, or experience makes the review more useful and personal.

  3. Share and tag the business on social media. Let people know what you purchased, experienced, or enjoyed. A personal recommendation often carries more trust than a paid advertisement.

  4. Comment on, save, and share local posts. Social-media engagement helps useful content reach more people. Even when you are not ready to purchase, you can help a business remain visible.

  5. Recommend the business directly to someone. If a friend needs a massage therapist, trainer, mechanic, photographer, hairstylist, restaurant, accountant, contractor, or meaningful gift, introduce them to someone local.

Show Up as a Good Neighbor

  1. Keep appointments—or cancel early. An unfilled appointment may represent a substantial loss for a small service-based business. Early notice gives the owner a chance to offer that time to someone else.

  2. Pay a fair price for skilled work. Local prices support rent, wages, insurance, licensing, education, equipment, taxes, supplies, and the time required to provide quality service. Avoid treating every independent business as a place to negotiate a discount.

  3. Tip appropriately when tipping is customary. A thoughtful tip directly supports the people preparing meals, providing personal services, and creating the experiences that make downtown welcoming.

  4. Offer constructive feedback privately. If something goes wrong, contact the business before posting a damaging public review. Independent owners are often directly involved and may genuinely want the opportunity to listen and make the situation right.

  5. Attend local events. Art walks, concerts, workshops, culinary gatherings, and seasonal celebrations bring people downtown and create foot traffic for many businesses at once. The Downtown Bellingham events calendar is a good place to begin.

Turn Local Support Into a Habit

  1. Subscribe to local newsletters. Email newsletters can alert you to new products, appointment openings, workshops, events, and seasonal offerings without relying on an algorithm.

  2. Choose local gifts for clients and employees. Business owners and employers can multiply their impact by purchasing appreciation gifts, incentives, meals, and gift cards from other Whatcom County businesses.

  3. Bring a friend with you. Invite someone to meet at a local café, explore a new store, attend an event, or try a locally provided service. One visit can introduce a business to a future regular customer.

  4. Return when you have a good experience. Loyal customers provide stability. Familiar relationships also allow local professionals to understand your preferences and serve you more personally over time.

  5. Remember that “local” includes services. Supporting local is not limited to retail stores and restaurants. It also includes trainers, massage therapists, health professionals, artists, yoga teachers, childcare providers, repair specialists, photographers, accountants, and many other people whose businesses may operate behind less-visible doors.

You Can Support a Local Business Without Spending Money

Some of the most meaningful support is completely free.

A review can help someone be discovered. A share can place a business in front of a new audience. A referral can lead to a long-term customer. A kind comment can remind an owner that their work is reaching someone.

These actions may seem small from the outside, but they do not feel small to the person receiving them. A positive review arriving during a difficult week can restore confidence. A referral can fill an empty appointment. A shared post can introduce a business to someone who has been searching for exactly that service.

Every action carries a message: You matter here. Your work contributes something important. We want you to stay.

What Kind of Bellingham Do We Want to Build?

Cities rarely lose their character all at once. It happens one darkened storefront, one lost gathering place, and one forgotten independent business at a time.

Fortunately, communities are strengthened in much the same way: one visit, one appointment, one review, one referral, and one conscious purchase at a time.

Supporting local does not require perfection. We cannot purchase everything locally, and no one should feel guilty when a local option is unavailable or unaffordable. Think Local First is simply an invitation to pause before purchasing and ask one question:

Is there someone in Bellingham who already provides what I need?

If the answer is yes, give that person or business an opportunity.
